Stress Release Tools:
Change Your Body's Reaction to Stress

Is It Really Possible To Change How My Body Reacts To Stress?

Yes.  If you’ve read this far, there’s a part of you that is ready to begin – and to make changes. My recommendations are the result of 30 years’ clinical experience and research on the physical effects of stress, fear, loss of control, and anger on the mind, body and spirit.  The first noticeable place where your body experiences these stressors is in the breath.  Let’s relieve the tensions you are carrying by breathing together..

aHow Do I Begin?

BREATHE OUT. Right now. Breathe out all your breath as though you are blowing out a small candle, until there is no breath remaining.

This seemingly simple act when done whenever you are aware of physical or mental tension, or stress, has the potential to change your response to stress MORE than almost any other choice you can make! I promise you that when you breathe out every time you are aware of tension, stress, anger, or fear – and you do it for three weeks – it will change your physical and emotional reactions to stress. As you continue breathing out you will change your body’s reactions to stress – FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE!

This breath is a profoundly simple choice. Over a three week period, release the tension in your body by breathing out immediately whenever you are stressed or tense. This act will lower your blood pressure and improve your overall health – both physical and mental, and have a profound effect on your quality of life and relationships – because instead of reacting from a position of shutting down, you will be reacting from a position of clarity and calmness.

LET’S TAKE THE BREATH ONE STEP FURTHER. When you breathe in your next breath, breathe it down into the cushion you are sitting on.

As you breathe in push your abdomen out. Pull your abdomen in as you breathe out. Do this for three breaths. Notice how quiet you feel inside.

The abdominal breath described above actually slows your body down – immediately!

As you are breathing, allow your chest and shoulders to remain still. Let your abdomen do the breathing. Breathing with your chest and shoulders invites a stress response!

These directions are simple and to the point. THEY WORK!

By the way, in case you learned once upon a time to breathe in as a way to reduce stress, forget it. When we are stressed and try to force a breath into an already tense body, we create an even higher physical tension in our body. ALWAYS begin by breathing out without first taking in a breath.

How Will I Benefit Right Now If I Lower My Stress Level?

  1. Your body will feel better
  2. You will have more energy
  3. You will sleep better
  4. You will feel less anxiety
  5. You will feel less pressured
  6. You will be less likely to feel irritable or have angry outbursts
  7. Your skin will have a healthy glow. Did you know that when we are chronically stressed the tiny blood vessels in our skin (and through our body) are constricted as a result? As we feel more relaxed our blood vessels relax, more blood gets through, and we actually can see the effects in our faces.
  8. You will make better decisions
  9. You may find that time seems to expand
